What Does Hair Have To Do With Discrimination?

Today, we want to bring your attention to an issue that many people overlook but are certainly discrimination. All too often, black people face discrimination when it comes to wearing their natural hair. This includes hairstyles such as Afros, twists, braids, cornrows, and dreadlocks.

The CROWN Act passed the California Senate in April and was recently approved by the Assembly. It would outlaw policies that “punish black employees and students for their hairstyles.” Supporters of the bill say that CROWN stands for – “creating a respectful and open workplace for natural hair.”

We could not agree more with this bill. For far too long people of color have been discriminated against due to their natural hair. Around the country, many black employees have filed lawsuits against employers, claiming they lost their jobs and faced workplace discrimination due to wearing their natural hair. In many places, the policies in place prohibit the wearing of many natural hairstyles that are culturally important to people of color.

  • The CROWN Act would extend the protections against discrimination already in place under the Fair Employment and Housing Act in California.
  • New York City recently enacted similar bans on natural hair discrimination, and lawmakers in NY and NJ have proposed similar legislation.

Workplace Discrimination Is Still Prevalent

We know that for the latest reporting year, there were over 84,000 instances of workplace discrimination reported to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. There are strong federal and state protections in place to protect workers from illegal discrimination because of their:

Workplace discrimination can completely devastate a person’s emotional and psychological well-being, and many people fear retaliation for reporting discrimination.
