Sexual harassment in the workplace takes so many forms that we could not list them all here. No two cases are the same, and it can often be hard to detect – at first. Sometimes it is just one offending employee. Other times, an entire workplace culture leads to an abundance of sexual harassment incidents.

The most common ways we see sexual harassment happen in the workplace include:

Physical Harassment – this is the most well-known type of harassment and involved direct physical contact with another person.

• Any unwanted touching of the body, hair, or clothing
• Kissing or hugging that is unwanted
• Stroking or patting behaviors
• Massaging of the neck or shoulders that is unwanted and uninvited
• Brushing against someone or standing too closely to a person

Verbal Harassment – in many cases, verbal harassment become normal in the workplace, but we want you to know it is still sexual harassment. This can include comments:

• About how a person looks
• Discussion of sexual activities
• Calling a person things like “baby,” “sweetheart,” “sexy,” etc.

Non-Verbal Harassment – this can be intimidation tactics and includes standing closely to someone, blocking doorways, staring or leering at a person, or even making sexual gestures.

Threats or Requests – in many cases, a person is threatened with termination or demotion for not providing sexual favors. Alternatively, they are told they need to perform sexual favors in order to get promoted or to get a raise.
